Recording that lovely piano we have at BSO to get a retro, old school sound.
I know that stereo techniques are not really retro; but if we are using Pro Tools and the digital domain, why don’t we add a little stereo on the final mix? The idea, while recording, was to have that room or ambient mic set as omni and to use a tube mic to add a little colouration; that can work as old school sound. Those SM 57’s used as stereo pair with that clean and powerful pre let us play with a “stereo image” of the source and a new colour for the final mix down, adding some “stereo” and also more of the hammer effects because of the distance.
I’m a big fan of using old dynamic or not very clean mics on very clean and powerful preamps, that brings you the opportunity to customize sounds in a very interesting way.
